Album Stream: Marqus Clae “THE MECCA”

Marqus Clae, 22-year-old, Houston, TX native releases his major label debut album, THE MECCA out now via Def Jam Recordings. Listen here. Co-signed by the likes of Houston’s well-respected artists Slim Thug, Lil Keke, and more. Marqus Clae is definitely one to watch.

Marqus Clae in his own words:
“I want to make one of those projects that people can go back to, like an Illmatic or a Life After Death,” he says. “I feel like everything I went through was just a test to get me where I am, now it’s about establishing dominance.”

Tracks like “Mama Use to Say” are pensive reflections that bubble with intensity and technical precision. Skittering over subdued strings and peaceful percussion, Clae darts through trauma and proverbs from his mother as he lets loose layered bars that evoke both distress and impenetrable belief. “From start to finish I had a plan to extort the business,” he raps. “My arms extended to real niggas that’s lost in trenches.” On “Ox,” the 22-year-old returns to his youth while unleashing more evidence of preternatural dexterity: “Regain sense of the past / Staring through the lens of a glass.” Visceral and exacting, the record is the result of a masterful instinct for storytelling.
