Rising Orlando rapper and Chameleon Ent. Associates signee LPB Poody returns today withI’m the Onea relentless new mixtape full of cutthroat lyricism, braggadocious hooks, and star-studded features fromfellow Southern rap stars like Lil WayneRick RossMoneybagg Yo, and Yung Bleu. The project was inaugurated with the premiere of the video for the single “I’m the One” on Thursday night’s especially rowdy Verzuz, via Triller, between Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Three 6 Mafia.
A densely packed 10-track offering, I’m the One sees Poody oscillate between gleeful menace (“I’m the One”), earnest reflection (“Eiffel Tower”), and unrelenting aspiration (“Best of Me”). For the Rick Ross-assisted “Best of Me,” he reflects on a troubled past while clinging to his own survivor’s instincts.Meanwhile, on “Bitter,” he taps Yung Bleu for a tune that focuses on themes of betrayal and a search for brighter days.
Of course, the project wouldn’t be complete without the remix to his playful hit “Batman,” which features engaging verses from Lil Wayne and Moneybagg Yo. Touching, but ruthless, thoughtful, yet irrepressibly fun, I’m the Oneis an exhibition in songwriting versatility. It’s also a reminder of why Poody is one of the most talented artists to rise out of Florida in years.
I’m the One continues a recent hot streak for Poody, a wave of momentum that was helped by the November release of the project’s title track and June’s “Batman (Remix),” which has earned over 50 million streams to date. That massive achievement arrived nearly two years after the release of his breakout single “Address It.” Last summer, Poody spent a lot of his time teaming up with other rising artists including 42 Dugg on “Connected” and he released his Untamed project last January, with features from Yung Bleu and GCM 26. Fan favorites like “Radio Boyz,” “Ghostriders,” and “Welcome 2 Carver Shores” reaffirmed Poody’s knack for terse street raps. With dynamic songwriting ability, big-time cosigns, and I’m the One at his back, LPB Poody is poised to reach a whole new level as he heads into the new year.
