Video: Darnell Williams “Porno” ft. Elohim

To be an iconic artist often means pushing the envelope and Detroit-bred and current Los Angeles resident, Darnell Williams is no stranger to controversy. “Porno,” the new visual by the director-turned-rapper, is significant for several reasons. The opening monologue is dense with references to World history and sets the tone for the powerful imagery that follows. There’s socially conscious messaging about race, exploitation within the entertainment industry, the glorification of prescription drugs in pop culture and even suicide. Williams, as both an artist and filmmaker, is ushering in a new standard of storytelling. The tone of the song and video accentuate his trademark humor, woke yet composed, that’s also riddled with themes of darkness amongst the light. With “Porno,” there’s much to dissect, discuss, think about and interpret, all of which is what great art is supposed to do.
