EP Stream: That Mexican OT “Nonsense and Mexican Shit” + Video: That Mexican OT, Curren$y, & K3vlar Deon “September 8th”

Today, breakout Texas rapper That Mexican OT releases his latest project, Nonsense and Mexican Shit. Listen HERE via Geffen Records. The raucous EP homes in on his formative years, growing up in Bay City, Texas, hustling on the streets, and ultimately finding music as a path to healing and success. Alongside the project, he’s also sharing a video for focus track “September 8th” featuring Curren$y. Watch it HERE.

According to That Mexican OT, Nonsense and Mexican Shit is made to feel like “a rollercoaster ride” and its vibrant, varied tracks more than deliver. “There’s no specific message or a single vibe,” hesays. “We’re just having fun.” That energy is captured by “September 8th.” He and Curren$y celebrate smoke and drink over a low-key beat — a sonic love letter of sorts to classic ‘90s hip-hop — while the DGreenFilmz-directed video takes us to a house party and a car show, steeping the two talented MCs in the finer things in life.

Of course, Nonsense and Mexican Shit also includes hedonistic singles “Ben Over” and “Pretty Rick,” which infuse malevolent trap beats with jazzy flairs and That Mexican OT’s signature “grito ranchero” samples. Meanwhile, introspective cuts like “Virgil” and “V-Man” look back on the rapper’s tumultuous childhood, reflecting on his early artistic ambitions and tough lessons learned from a complicated relationship with his father.

Other notable tracks include “Manee,” which showcases That Mexican OT as a technically deft rapper with few parallels, and “KDC,” which boasts of wavy codeine-fueled nights. He shows his serious side on “NBA,” a warning for haters to stay away from his loved ones. Ultimately, NAMS is an exercise in personal growth and musical versatility, bouncing between tender nods to family and peers, and cold-hearted reminders that South Side rappers are not to be messed with.

That Mexican OT is the gritty alias of 23-year-old rapper Virgil René Gazca, a Texas native with his sights set on world domination. He began spitting at four years old and recorded his first album at the age of 10. Gazca mixes inspirations from East Coast rappers like Big L with the inimitable swagger of Southern rap, creating his distinct brand of fast-rhyming wit and trap debauchery that has made his music and cheeky merch some of the freshest in the game. Nonsense and Mexican Shit represents a new level for his surreal sense of humor, his stunning technical proficiency, and his knack for empathetically detailed rap songs—the project is the sign of a rapper who’s truly coming into his own.
